More posting, why not?

I'm sure you all can see the big, blank square at the top of my journal (or maybe you can't, who knows.....)

Anyway, I uploaded the header image i've had over at LJ for years to my DW account, put the 'embed image' url into the 'header' slot in the 'customize my theme' page here on DW and....
Big blank, no image. It's baffling.

Is it possibly that my 'theme' won't support a header?
If anyone out there has a suggestion, I'm open!!

I might even change the image, since it's been so long and I might just need a refresh...but we'll see.

Ta, everyone, and I hope you are doing well and all - hope everyone on LJ is slowly coming over here, just in case (see - my last post on LJ).
*smishes you, my fandom family*

ETA: THANK YOU, Felis!! Fixed, whoo! Maybe I will add an informal poll:
Should Tabaqui change her header image to something else, or leave it as is?
What'cha think, flist? :D

Well, so much for meme and posting! Heh. Sorry, guys. I think - and this is no reflection on my flisties who are doing the meme - I'm just not finding the questions all that interesting vis a vis: things I want to answer.

So i'm looking for something else, because I *do* like chatting and communicating with you all, and I need to make my brain work, not just sit here mindlessly watching vid or whatever.

Now, Read more... )

So! That might seem a bit heavy for a 'come back' post, but...it is what it is. All the fucked-up shite going on here in the States has generated a *lot* of energy, and I think using that energy for all the good you can is a good thing.

Hot and 'summery' here, all of a sudden - I guess with the solstice in a couple days, it's to be expected! Keep cool, my dear flist, and be well and safe! <3

I've been watching a show about pandemics (called, appropriately, 'Pandemic', on Netflix), which of course covers the 1918 Influenza pandemic. The pandemic that Steve was basically born into.

So, of course, me bring me, I had to research and read up about it, and I found that...children who had been exposed to the 'Spanish flu' in utero had a bevy of life-long physical health issues, from lung to heart to vision..... Sound familiar? Oh yes. )

So I got inspired and wrote a little something. :D Almost a drabble, but i'm over by 36 words.

Steven Grant Rogers was born in a grave. )

I'm hoping to do more writing this weekend. I feel inspired! And omg, there's the sun! We've had nothing but grey and overcast and 'wintry mix' of rain/snow/sleet for the past five days. Just - slush and mess everywhere, and luckily the temps hovering just *above* freezing, so no ice-rink streets. Still cold as fuck, though. I wear so many layers to work, I start to feel a little like Randy from 'A Christmas Story'.

I didn't do the Snowflake Challenge this year, either. I almost did, but...it just felt a little too repetitive. I dunno. I feel like I'm being so lurky and passive here and in fandom in general, and I hate it, but i'm having a hard time engaging and i *do not like that*!!

I am, however, really enjoying Show's last season. Really am.
ALSO - reading the penultimate 'The Expanse' novel and OMFG!!! Bastards.
Also reading an amazing Downton Abbey AU all about Thomas and it is SO FUCKING GOOD. Updated fairly regularly, nice length of chapters.... The kind of fic where you see the AO3 alert in your inbox and you go 'eeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!' :D

Part one (complete): Halo Effect.
Part two (WIP but regular updates):
Soldier's Heart by Alex51324.

Hope all of you out there are well and happy and enjoying your January!

Hello! Time for the next Sunshine Challenge. :D This one is Fanwork Recommendations.

Now...the biggest problem with that is that my memory SUCKS. Really, truly sucks. So I have a lot of trouble reccing stuff because i forget. I cannot tell you how many times i've gotten all excited for a fic and then, halfway through realized i've read it before.

SO! To get around this, I'm going to do a little cheat. But first!
Some fic authors I love and adore )

Now for the cheat. I can sincerely, and without a bit of doubt, recommend every single author and fic in my AO3 Bookmarks. I don't have as many as some, but. Every Fic. Every Author (and most of the time, every fic by every author).

So - go! Read! Enjoy! :D

Which it was! But thankfully not too hot, so at least it was enjoyable. :D

So, the third Sunshine Challenge: Canon Recommendations! )

Outside the cut: this fucking fic. It's a type of fic i have a lot of issues with, but these authors changed it up and made one of the most funny, ridiculous, heart-achey, gorgeous, sweet and sexy fics in the genre i've ever read. Go. Now. LOVE.
Scents and Sensibility: The Working Assassin's Guide to Supersoldier Seduction by galwednesday, silentwalrus, skellerbvvt.

Read it. Read *all the fics* they wrote. They are awesome. :D

I was going to add a picture here of my cool American Pride flag, but fucking LJ won't fucking let me upload it OMFG, it's so annoying. Next time.

On this really very wet, rainy, and grey day! I hope all this rain puts the kibosh on 5th of July fireworks, as one night was enough, thank you!

Here's the second Sunshine Challenge: What's In A Name?, or - Fannish Identity.

Some questions offered I thought I'd answer.... )

My goodness, so that was a lot. :D Happy weekend, everyone!

ALSO - if you have any fannish questions for me? Feel free to ask! :D

Even though I would rather hide in a hole than go out into the miserable, muggy, bug-infested SUNSHINE. Like sunshine is such an amazing thing, wth.

ANYWAY. :D I thought i'd do it so i'd have an incentive to post more, like the Snowflake Challenge.

SO - the first challenge is Fannish Housekeeping but, to be honest, I don't have much of that to do.

I will, however, post this, because i think it's important, and it's also true. From my AO3: "Transformative works statement: I give blanket permission to podfic my work or create other fic, art, or etc., based on my fic, so long as your work contains a link back to my original fic. Please also leave a comment in the original and/or email me with a heads up."

I am looking forward to the third season of Stranger Things (on the 4th). I am *not* looking forward to morons with fireworks. I do get a four-day weekend, though. Whooo!

Also - pretty Chris Evans icon, because why not? :D

*hugs*

So, it's quite possible this is shouting to the void, and everyone already knows/nobody cares.
But! I think it's useful, so i wanted to share.

If you would like to archive your Tumblr blog, there are two ways to do it (that I'm aware of):

This is how you do it if you have a WordPress account (and I know nothing about WordPress, so I don't know if an account over there is weird or good or whatever). But it makes your archived blog publicly accessible.

This is how to create an archive on your hard drive via a download. And if you keep using Tumblr and adding to your blog, you can just delete the old archive and download your blog again every month or so, if you want to keep it current.

So! Hope that's helpful. I wasn't aware that YAHOO had bought out Tumblr; I predict it won't be around for more than a couple years, max; Yahoo is the universal ruiner of all things.

*waves*
Hiya, flist! Still cold as fuck here, with endless weather advisories of negative temps, frigid wind chills, and snow/ice/wintry mix/freezing drizzle. Fun times! Where's that early spring the little fuzzy bastard in Pennsylvania promised us?

Stay warm, flisties! And dry! We got flood warnings, too, here in Misery, and *tornado watches*, good lord.
*smooch*

I swear I'm going to talk about 'Roadside Picnic', which was so odd and different and good. But not tonight, heh.

Tonight, i watched 'Call the Midwife'. I love that show! And the narrator (who is the 'older' version of the character whose life the show is based off of) said something so lovely....

It was like a blessing, and I feel that we could all use a blessing. So I wanted to repeat it here.

Love is the beginning - it should be the final word.
There are always shadows, but they fall behind us.
Ehoes, but they fade upon the air.
We will sometimes forget, but not always.
Go forward, in joy.

For all of you, my dear flisties...go forward, in joy.
*hugs*

And that's with no snow! It's just single-digit temps, negative digit wind chill, and no sun, no sun, no sun. Argh.

Mostly i'm freezing, and then I come home, bundle myself into fleece pyjamas, and get into bed with the electric blanket on 'high'.

Which means, of course, that i then doze off, but at least i'm warm!!

I'm turning to an agency here in the my state that will help you to winterize your house for free. I don't know if I'll qualify, or what they'll do, but anything will help. My furnace is not putting out very warm air, which is concerning (and fucking cold).

So that's why i kinda dropped off the posting radar, which I feel bad about, and haven't been talking quite as much.

I'm working on two fics right now, one of which is original (mostly, RPF but easily changed), and am enjoying it, heh. It's not even six, it's pitch-black out, it's supposed to snow, and be even colder tonight/tomorrow, and my heating bill (even with the thermostat on 62) keeps going UP.

But i'm here, I'm reading, i'll try and comment more. I really enjoyed last week's Supernatural, it was very good, felt kinda old-school.

I'm reading a book right now called Roadside Picnic, by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. I like it, it has some very interesting stuff going on. BUT...there's a thing about it that bothers me. Which I'll write about next time because i can barely feel my frozen little fingers!!

Stay warm, my flisties!

So, since I've been posting stuff, I figured I'd better *keep* posting!
Firstly - hello, new flist people! I haven't had new flisties in a while, so that's awesome!
*waves*

Second - someone wrote a ficlet, just for me! How awesome is that?

Lost Lilies Out of Mind by Kangeiko. It's a Gone With the Wind ficlet, from the POV of Ella, Scarlet's child by Mr. Kennedy. I luff it. :D

And, also, I put a couple more things up at the other AO3, scarecrow_horses.
Under the Mountain; Spike and Xander in Seattle (with cats), and
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, which I mean to post *at Xmas*, and totally forgot.

It's damn cold here, and they keep threatening all sorts of dreadful weather (ice, freezing rain, sleet, snow), but it all seems to go around us. Good and bad, because keep ice the hell away, but...i really miss snow, and would love an actual *winter snowfall*.

Ah, well. Keep warm, my flisties!
*smooch*

I dunno about any of you, but I *could not* access Dreamwidth yesterday. It just would not load, no matter what. So annoying.

So - a belated but very heart-felt HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY! to my dearest and nearest, [personal profile] sweptawaybayou . I luff ya, my dear! *smishes*

Now, the last two challenges! Yay, I finished! :D

Challenge Fourteen: Talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. )

Challenge Fifteen: Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it. )

There we have it! Whooo! Thank you, all, for participating and being part of the challenge with me!

*waves* Hullo! Well, 'Snowpocalypse' came and went, and it wasn't ver 'pocalypic' here - just freezing rain, slushy snow (2 inches?) and cold cold cold. A few hours north, though, my poor [personal profile] sweptawaybayou got over five inches and the power out (in most of the city) since 5 am Saturday. So she spent a *very* miserable 30+ hours huddling for warmth and hoping for a fix.

So, here we go - challenges!! A couple of these under the cuts are pretty long, so - you are warned.

Day Ten - Create a Fanwork )

Day Eleven - In your own space, talk about your creative process(es... )

In your own space, create your own challenge. )

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. )

So - there we go! I hope you all are having a good day, had a good weekend, aren't too cold or too hot or too wet, heh. I saw the trailer for the Spider-verse movie (which i had been ignoring), and it looks adorable as fuck. :D

Whoops, yes, I skipped a day. I was really, really, really zoned, so...best to just wait. Plus, it got super-chilly here again, after being up in the sixties, so i was kinda hibernating, heh.

So, here we go.

Day Eight )

Day Nine )

And there we go! All caught up. Now I must go do *my* laundry.

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you.

Weeeeeeeell...I'm trying that. :D I'm actually writing some original fic (something i've done for years, but never published anywhere, online or otherwise). But this I might try to, who knows?
Boys, of course...and spaaaaaaaaace! :D We shall see.

I dip my toes into new fandoms all the time, if it's an author i love or a person i trust who recs it, so...that's not new, but it *is* a good thing. I found awesome 'Eagle of the Ninth' and original Historical RPF fic that way, as well as some very cool Merlin fic (never watched the show) and Game of Thrones (show, ditto, read the first four? books and gave up, utterly bored and confused).

So there we go!
And now i'm going to bed, heh.
Sixty-plus degrees here today, WTH, climate?

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

I do this a lot, actually. I follow rec links to new authors, I comment to people in threads, etc.... Not bragging, but even in my early fandom days as a wee Tabi, i never had any issues with talking to people or interacting.

So this one is done deal, heh.

They say sixties here this weekend - whoo! Windows will be open, heat will be off! The cats will love it, and so will we.

On a personal note, I have a VISTA supervisor who does site visits with me at the fire department. We mostly sit around and gossip, bitch, and just chat. She is *so* fun, and i like her so much, and now she's being moved off site visits, and I won't see her anymore (unless we make some kind of plan or something).

I am not pleased with the prospect of some other person coming in, and not being able to visit with my friend. I'm assembling a little gift bag for her for her last visit, and when I mentioned it to Chief today, he chipped in 20 dollars, which was really nice of him.

Goodnight, flist - I am toast!

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

Holy gods. I'm supposed to choose one thing? HOOOOOOOOOOW?!!!!!

Sheesh. I think I'll cheat a little.

Books: Well, nothing and no one beats CJ Cherryh. I mean....this woman is so damn *good*. Her sci-fi is hard core, makes sense, and *works*. Her fantasy is incredibly detailed and draws a lot from our own myths and folklore (elvish, Russian spirits, ORCS, c'mon!!). Her humor is subtle and always in-character, her drama riveting, her characters so finely drawn....

She's one of the few sci-fi writers out there who puts same-sex couples into her work, and one of the few sci-fi writers who actually has *good* 'strong female characters' in her work.

I just can never get enough.
(Here is a review that really lays out, to me, why she is so amazing. Might be a little spoilery for this particular novel. Downbelow Station.)

Movies: Well, just now, the MCU movies, most particularly the Captain America movies. I love so much how Steve is not some quasi right-wing 'RIGHTEOUS AMERICAN' but a man who actually gives a damn about 'the other', and always, always, always, tries to do the 'right' thing (not the conveniently right thing, or the right right now thing, but the RIGHT thing). Plus, he's just so damn cute, and lost and sad and gorgeous and funny.....

And then, of course, we have BUCKY, who breaks my heart even when he's not being tortured, and who has seen the worst of humanity but is still striving, trying, *hoping*.

And SAM, oh Sam, who is not a superpowered human, but has an amazing heart. He because a pararescue, he dove into the jaws of death to *heal people*, and he is canny, and empathetic, and so brave....

I love my boys, so very much. :D

And - sekrit mention just for Snow: Bread and Circuses, bb. Bread and Circuses! :D (Hey, it's original.)

Homg, it's cold. JAYZUS.

For today's challenge: Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Oooh, man. It's so hard to pick and choose!
But I did it. :D
In the spirit of the season: The Not-Christmas Not-Truce of 1944 by dropdeaddream. I have never laughed so hard at any one fic than I have at this. Steve and Bucky and Nazis and a cow.... Holy. Fuck.

And because I think original work needs a wee boost sometimes, too, try every single Ancient History RPF by dirtybinary. Mostly Scipio Africanus and Hannibal Barca. Full of amazing tid-bits of history, written like a dream, lush and gorgeous and bitter-sweet and just *good*.

Finally, how about some art? I have admired the art of Quickreaver for some time. I love the details, I love the colors, I love how true to the characters they are. Really just some amazing stuff.

So there you have it!
And now I'm going to huddle over my space heater some more. :D
