When i posted the other day, i wanted to post about *one more thing*, and i completely forgot.

So - everybody say 'hello' to the newest member of our family!! *really big picture...that was totally too big. resized!*

Oliver is about nine weeks old. And so, so, so fuzzy. So wee!! He and Jack get along pretty well - they sleep together a lot, and play. Jack's showing him how much fun the recycling can be.

Oliver has the funniest little rusty, complaining meow - he hates to be picked up and dangled, so he'll do his little 'aaoooooow!' sound. Or if he wants in your lap, he'll do it, too. He and Chango have a truce, but no real friendship yet. Surprise surprise.

Also, i signed up for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen, and we'll be getting our prompt assignments soon. Can't wait! Friends of ours from Minneapolis are coming down this week to visit, which will be fun. They were here last when we just moved in, so i hope they think all the little things we've done are neat.

Last but not least, under my second cut....

Yes, i mean the new Star Trek. Cat and i went to see it last night. I? Loathe the actor playing Spock, so i was doing my very best to *not* let that affect me. He actually did a good job, considering.

Considering things like the script. I just...really, really, really did not like it. At all. Did not like that Kirk in no way, shape, or form earned the crew's trust. Did not like the utter breech of protocol that was Uhura *abandoning her post* without saying a word to the acting commander/captain or anyone else. Did not like Spock going nuts on Kirk, though he deserved it. Did not like the nothing-there-ness of Sulu and Chekov, and the over-the-top-ness of Scotty. Bones was...eh. He hadn't earned his place on the bridge yet, either - he's supposed to be in the infirmary? Not on the bridge. *sigh*

If you want a more in-depth review, go read [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian's post on the subject. She pretty much says exactly what it made me feel. And for the record, i don't think the Kirk and Spock actors are attractive *at all*.

Th-th-th-that's all, folks. :)

Oh, he is SO adorable. :D

I WANT to see Star Trek so I can decide if I like it or not, I just haven't managed yet. :(
Monday, May 25th, 2009 12:58 am (UTC)
EEEEeeee! Er, sorry. That was my 'oooohlookatthedarlingkitty' noise...and face actually, heh.

Congrats on the new little one!!

He's adorable! Just sooo adorable.
Monday, May 25th, 2009 02:07 am (UTC)
What an adorable baby kitty. So cute. I want to cuddle him. Hello, Oliver! Welcome to the world!
Monday, May 25th, 2009 02:21 am (UTC)
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the movie, love. I had a sneaking suspicion that you wouldn't. As much as I adored it, a lot of that is my history with Star Trek. And I agree with you on Uhura leaving her post. *smootch* I have no issue with your 'unpopular fannish opinion'. What a dork you are!

Oscar Oliver, Oliver, Oliver is adorable! What a cutie! Lovely addition to the family!

and we'll be getting our prompt assignments soon. Can't wait!

I'm super-keen. I LOVED summergen last year and wrote one of my favouritest stories eva.

I'm just waiting for the day that I get someone I know in a ficathon... heh. I don't think I ever have, it's a thing.
Monday, May 25th, 2009 02:28 am (UTC)
OMG!! the cuteness!!!! He is so squee-worthy!

I'm going to see Star Trek tomorrow so I'll see if I agree with your unpopular opinion. I'm rather picky when it comes to this universe, so we'll see, I guess.

*huggles*
Monday, May 25th, 2009 03:28 am (UTC)
Cute kitty! And I can't wait to read your new fic.

I've never watched the old ST before so I watched this knowing almost nothing of it. It wasn't bad, I quite enjoyed it but it did occur to me that Starfleet was sending babies to outer space, and the alternate/future universe thing really had me confused!
Monday, May 25th, 2009 10:55 am (UTC)
It would be such a boring world if we all liked the same things. I didn't find Kirk or Spock attractive either but I was so hung up on the whole *look it's Karl Urban* (Bones)thing that they could have been on screen naked and got barely a glance from me.

Nawwwww, so cute and tiny and fluffy! *coos at him*

Star Trek. Well, I haven't seen it yet, and when I do, I intend to enjoy it. I am not a die-hard fan of TOS, though I am fond of it, and I do like Zachary Quinto (or at least liked him in Heroes, young!Spock seems to look rather... babyfaced, as far as I can tell). And I am prepared for a movie that takes the TOS characters and turns them into modern-day action heroes. With big explosions, unadjusted rebel!heroes with issues, The One Woman, and plot holes over realism. Also, clearly protocol is for old, stiff, dusty movies who do not attract a young and hip audience and flop horribly.

OMG! Your new kitten is crazy adorable! Such a cutie.

Ah interesting that you're not feeling the new ST love. I wonder if it may help that I've never been that into the originals (although I am familiar with them). I did go with a lot of original ST fans and they loved it, so it's interesting to see the different reactions to it. I'm taking my dad tonight (who enjoys the originals) so it'll be neat to see what he thinks.

DUDE!!!!! YOU LOATHE SPOCK!!!!! HOW THE HELL?!!!!!!

And--and--I think Spock was hot! Kirk was kinda cute. He had his moments.

Why do you loathe Spock?

As for Kirk--he was annoying, but I liked him. And I don't think anyone could earn the trust of the crew after one escaped, no matter how many Romulans got dumped into a black hole. I think they trust him enough to get their asses out of a desperate bind, and to think quick. Anything else would have to come with time and experience.

Also, I don't think this Kirk was supposed to be particularly trustworthy, even after three years in the Academy. He lies and is manipulative--the kind of hoodlum who never would have made it into Starfleet without Capt. Pike. Alternate universe ::shrug::

I like that they had that whole fear-thing as a theme throughout, making decisions in spite of fear. And Kirk has yet to accept that there are no-win scenarios. He'll probably learn that in the next film(s).

As for the script--wasn't rocket science. If you want a good script, that's the first two Star Trek movies, and the series' up to and including DS:9. Voyager and Enterprise were . . . iffy. But yes, more complex of script in most episodes than the 11th film.

Protocol breeches (for serious, Uhura abandoned her station at least three times) dude, they were all new, and scared and so beyond anything they'd have learned in the Academy! If they'd stayed in protocol all the time, they'd have been robots. And no body likes robots :)

I loved Spock going nuts on Kirk--loved that all his training couldn't keep out the crazy-making anger that is six billion of your species getting scragged all at once. Including Mom--his Mom was the line in the sand, beyond which people got their asses kicked. I liked seeing him break under that, because (I think) it's one of those kill-or-make-stronger moments.

Simon Pegg as Scotty? You didn't like? Duuuuuude! Simon Pegg is wondertastic and I like that his Scotty was over-the-top, and mentally ten million different places at once.

Definitely could've done with more of Sulu (the Asian-as-horrible-driver stereotype they touched on? So wrong, yet so hilarious) and Chekov. And Bones, of course--though I wasn't surprised to see him on the Bridge at the end. He's Jim's best friend and the closest thing he's got to common sense. I think that it's a saving grace that Bones is one of a very few people (Capt. Pike and possibly Spock to round out the top three) this AU Kirk will listen to. Though it would've been cooler to see him arguing with a patient at the end before finally just sedating him, or something. A nice "it's good to be the king of the Sickbay" moment for Bones.

Also, two people who doesn't seem to getting a lot of buzz: I really liked Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike. He did a great job. And BEN CROSS as Sarek. Could've done with more Sarek.

And Nero . . . such a pedestrian monster, but in a way that I liked, that seemed to be on purpose. This was no Khan Singh, but some Romulan shmoe with an ax to grind, and in a horrible twist of fate, the tools with which to do so effectively. And ironically, he did far worse than Khan, for all his operatic Brilliance, would ever achieve--ooh! I hope Khan is in the next film. And that he's not played by Antonio Banderas.

Dude. Don't get me started. The movie was, over all, IMHO, well-acted and a pleasant sort of no-brainer. The star wasn't the script or the theme. Or originality of concept. It was the characters. Some finds, and some really nice show-casing.

But your cats are hella cute. They look like they're saying "eff off, we're tryin' to sleep over here!"

Okay, so, fine, I won't punch a kitten. I'll punch a small child, instead. That sentence filled me with rage :D

Totally don't agree with the Trek thing.

BUT

Oh what a cute kitten! Oliver! I love it. He looks so soft and fluffy. I want to nom him. I also love that kitten smell. That new-cat smell.

You are soooo lucky! I have to wait a couple weeks before I get my new baby. Gatz needs somebody to play with.

PUFFYHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!
um...
sorry about that. i get excited by kittes.

Oliver is cute beyond words!

You blaspheme about Star Trek, woman! But that's okay - statistically, you're always gonna have some on the other end of the curve...

I loved Quinto as Spock, and the guy playing Bones. Everything else I loved was just the story.

What an adorable kitten! Absolutely made me melt. Congratulations on the new member of the family!

We haven't seen the ST movie yet so don't know much about it. We really want to see it but Ron's back isn't up to sitting in the theater. We'll catch it on the DVD. I'm sure we'll have our own issues with it one way or another!

What a cute kitty.

I so share your opinion of the new Trek and finally put together a post (http://shakatany.livejournal.com/255819.html) on my LJ (using bits of my comments from over at [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian's)
