but this is so cool!
There's an author out there called Zilpha Keatly Snyder.
She writes childrens books. Or, rather, she writes wonderful BOOKS that can be for children or adults.

A lot of her books are out of print, but some have just recently been re-printed.
I wrote her literally YEARS ago, asking about this - and two days ago i got a reply! She had replied at the time with a negative answer, but now, years later, she's saved address and wrote back!

So very cool.

I used to know a couple of childrens' authors and they were truly lovely people.

Gormengahst... I'm sure I taped that off TV a few years back and never watched it. I might have to try and find the tape. I can remember lovely gothic designs and madly giggling sisters, but that's about it.

I loved Zilpha Keatley Snyder! Is The Changeling the one about the poltergeist? If it is, I remember it being pretty creepy, delicious shudder-making. I loved The Egypt Game and The Velvet Room, but I remember being disappointed with the ending of the Velvet Room -- doesn't the main character kind of give up going to the room at the end? In favor of living a "normal life?"

As for Gormenghast, another favorite of mine. Have you read it yet? Steerpike and Spike -- some similarities there. There is nothing like the Gormenghast books and they are indescribable. I think even the best attempt at making a cinematic version of Gormenghast is doomed to failure; its home is only in the imagination.

The Changeling is about Marth and Ivy and magic. Ivy wants to be a dancer, Marth is called 'the mouse'.
I've only read a few of her things - so hard to find! But The Changeling and Black and Blue Magic are two of my favorites.
I'm going to be buying EVERYTHING of hers they're reprinting, for sure!

And i only got a chance to read like, five pages of Gormenghast, and it's so. Freakin'. Cool.
Love it!
I loved the PBS movie they made, loved that Steerpike, but can't wait to read the rest!

OK, now I'll have to try and remember which one was about the poltergeist. I think there was one about a poltergeist? Or has my memory gone? I do remember reading the one about Ivy wanting to be a dancer, now that you describe it. I read all the ZKS books my library had once upon a time long ago.

Tell me what you think about Gormenghast when you get more into it.

Hrmmmm...can't help you. Her books were hard to find even then, and i think the few we got came through Scholastic books.
I'm getting what i can online, slowly but surely.

I remembered we had a chat aaages ago about the Gormenghast TV thing, (which i was mildly appalled by - having read the trilogy as a wee 'un in school, it made a BIG impact cos the books are *A-Maze-Ing*) (Oooh, apart from JRM, cos well - *damn*)
Knew you'd like to read the real thing, and remembered about it one morning during my minimal Net access time. (Got me a copy of The Phantom Tollbooth too, thanks to you reminding me of it's existance, smootch X)
