Isn't that a lovely icon? I have my Brigitta von Trapp icon, with her peeking out from behind a book, but i needed a 'fannish' reading icon, too. Now i have *three*. Yessss.

Yes, i'm still working on prompts. I'm also working on my apocalypse fic and it's over 8,000 words and counting, wheeee!

I'm also seriously considering the spn_j2_bigbang, sign ups on the 11th. If i can get a coherent narrative cobbled together by then, i'm gonna do it. :)

But! Right now, i'm a little...scattered. And so i'm gonna do a meme thing, which i pretty much *never* do, but hey - why not? I know i have a lot of flisties who are new/er, and sorry if i never say hi - i have no clue when i'm de/friended, i don't have any alerts or anything, so hello!

Ooooh, good question....

I think Dean's favorite book is.... Tom Sawyer. Full of boy's tricks and pranks and boy's hatred of rules but, in the end, Tom is a hero, saves the day, wins the girl. I think Dean saw himself as Tom when he was younger, and now that he's older, it's a comfort - if only his life were as simple.

I don't....know. There's just something about his books that irritate me. Maybe i need to try again, as it's been ages and ages since i've read anything at all. My brother had a few and i just...didn't like 'em.

I like Larry Niven much better, despite his flaws, heh, and Roger Zelazny.

Well, the sex does get to be a little stupid at times. He's his own grandpa? Really? LOL And I always get cheesed the way H is so careful that the sex in Stranger in a Strange Land not be homosexual, even though it really should be to fit the mission (not just cause I always have my slash goggles on). But I still really like a lot of his story ideas.

It's funny, i remember reading a lot of the 'old guard' of Sci-fi and being annoyed at how they dealt with the women in the stories and the sex. Way too 'patriarchal' for me a lot of the times, and i find it only gets worse with age.

Which is a pity, because i do *love* some of that stuff, but even James Tiptree, who is a *woman*, did it. Grrr! I could still read her stuff over and over though.

I was going to comment to say 'oh please do a bigbang fic this year!', but I'm also going to be a bit rude and thread-crash to say I agree about Tiptree.

Have you ever read, I think the title is Brightness Falls From the Sky, where the gorgeous heroine in the fabulous relationship gets accelerated forward in time to her 80s? Her husband immediately stops loving her because now she's all Eww Wrinkly!, she immediately stops loving herself, she ceases to be active in the plot, and it's all treated entirely unproblematically by the text? That book infuriates me!

And then there's Sherri Tepper, who just goes way too far in the other direction. Sheesh, Sherri, stop preaching for one page, wouldja? ;)

I have read that, yeah - i've read most of her stuff. I really *like* her but yeah, her women are all kinda helpless and 'oh, save me big man!!' and hoping to have babies or whatever. I know it was kind of the times but...it's really a bummer, too, to think she either forced herself to write that or she thought that that was good. I dunno.

And yeah - Ms. Tepper can kind of make me wanna toss her books at a wall.

You ask a hard question. I had this comment box open last night and finally went to bed and had to shut it all down and still no reply. :)

I don't see Sam as a terribly sentimental person. Not the kind of person to keep ticket stubs and pictures and notes and things. But....

Down deep in his duffel, where Dean can't see, where *he* can't really see, but he knows....

Sam has his rabbit. It's squishy and soft and the nose is worn to the weft and one ear is half torn off and the paws dangle and there's no tail anymore and he's a little grubby but.... That's his rabbit. And sometimes - very, very occasionally, like when Dean was dead....

He and rabbit cuddle.

What's your creative process like - are you a quick writer, or do you spend a long time deliberating over a story?

Ah ha ha. Well. It's rather...scattered.

If i have a scene or image in my head, something i really want to write, than it takes me no time at all to write quite a lot of words. Once i get to what feels like a natural stopping point, i'll go back and re-read and tweak and just...revel in having that bit out into the 'open air', as it were.

But then i usually don't write anything on the fic for a day or so, and just mull over where i'm going next. I usually have quite a lot of a fic in my head, but it takes me getting to particular stepping stones to get out big chunks of it.

I can stall for *weeks* if i can't get past a certain plot-point that's unclear or that i don't like or am trying to work into the story when it's *not* workable. Once i finally give up and say 'fine, that's out', then i'll usually have another big burst of creative energy 'cause i'm not hobbling myself anymore trying to *force* a point.

I tend not to have anything more than vague ideas in mind for a whole story - sometimes just one or two scenes or lines i really want to use - and, for instance, with this apocabigbang, i had no real clue how it ended until about a week ago, and i'd been thinking about it since November! That doesn't usually keep me from writing, though - i just fill in and fill in until i can figure out exactly where i'm going.

In my, very limited, writing experience, trying to force part of a story is damn hard. It just sucks up all your inspiration!

Thank you for this insight into your methods. As kiss-arse as it sounds, I love your writing! So it's really interesting to me to read about how you write. :)

Forcing sucks. Not only is it almost impossible, but generally what you end up with is utter drek.

I do well with them only if i have a lot of lead-in time. Then i have a goal and something that will *make* me write. Otherwise, i get all stupid and lazy. This one is like...June, so that's doable.

OTPs! When you're reading, do you have specific OTPs in fandoms that you are faithful to? Or is your reading more dependent on one or two specific characters being involved?

You know, i used to think i didn't, but now...i really do. I really don't *want* to read Spike/Wesley, or Dean/Uriel or Rodney/Teyla. I like how my OTP's fit together. I *like* how John and Rodney spark off each other. And, when done right, i really like how Teyla and Ronon fit, how Spike and Xander snark and bitch and oh, add Angel and you've got fun until the sun burns out. :)

I will read gen of any fandom i like, because i love the characters, but when people are pairing up 'my' boys or girls with someone besides the OTP, i just...feel all bummed 'cause they're missing out on the love of their life.
