Our dear old plush boy, our 'old man', Naja Haji Masticophis, has died. He was unhappy last night, crying a lot, and at some point when we were all in bed, he stopped being able to walk or get up. He was lying on the cold kitchen floor this morning, head on the rim of the waterdish. After i took Monstrous to school, i just held him in my lap for a few hours, petting him and talking to him, until he stopped breathing.
Poor old plush. He was eighteen-going-on-nineteen and just...worn out. We buried him out in the country near his pal Desmodus.
Chango and Scratch seem a little weirded out. I think they miss him.
Rest in peace, Hajit-ma.

*i dunno if i'll respond to comments or not. i'm bummed. so if i don't...i do appreciate any that are left, very much...*

I am so so sorry for your loss, T. Please accept my condolences. I know that you gave him the best life a kitty could ask for, and he still loves you for it, even from Kitty Heaven, where he is surrounded by warm laps and all he bright shiny objects he can chase.

Whate'er of cat the world contains,
From Tabby on the kitchen stair
To Tiger burning in his lair
Unite your melancholy strains;
De Marsay dead! and never more
Shall I behold that silky form
Lie curled upon the conscious floor
With sinuous limbs and placid snore,
As one who sleeps through calm and storm.
And (when we've adequately moaned)
For all the world to wonder at,
Let this great sentence be intoned:
No cat so sweet a mistress owned;
No mistress owned so sweet a cat.
-- J.K. Stephen (1859-92), "Elegy on de Marsay"
His picture reminds me of a few cats I've known. He lived a long life for a cat and I'm sure it was a happy one with you and your family. He finally went gently into that good night without much pain in the presence of his loved one. He had a good death without the need for medical intervention, the kind of death we all would like. Think of him now chasing butterflies in the Summerlands.

I lost my dog that I'd had for 11 years last October. I still expect to see him lying in the yard when I drive up or on the porch (in the way) when I want to go out.
It sucks losing a companion like that.

I'm very sorry. I know how incredibly sad it is to lose our four-legged family members.

What a wonderful way to go when one has to shuffle off this mortal coil.
I am so sory for you, losing a member of the family for 19 years is never easy and he is a very beautiful boy.

It never gets any easier; unfortunately I've had far too much experience with this. Let yourself grieve--you've lost a family member! He knew he was loved when he went, and that's a very important thing.
