I've been a brat about commenting--just wanted more, more! and didn't take the time, but this is fascinating. I'll admit to being the slow duck & missing the point that this wasn't Sam's original...world/timeline? but it's comforting to see this other Dean warm to him. Distrusting, but still an instinctual connection; there's no way he'd have let Sam in that fast otherwise, I wouldn't think.
It was the duffel link that made me suck-it-up & comment; every male over the age of 15 in my family & extended family has ended up with one of those. Trips to & from the service (my pops & his brother) and then my brothers & cousins...heh. When you started describing it, I had an awwwww moment. And then promptly blanched when I read the specifics of the demon host's neck ;)
