I have to admit, Spike isn't all 'in love' with Xander here. He sees someone he can take advantage of, at first. And then someone who's fighting spirit he admires. He's *not* head over heels by any means, but he's feeling posessive and attracted and that's enough for him, for the moment. The last chapter might make it more clear.
And yes, knowing the book a little *does* help, although having just watched the Disney abomination would be enough. You'd probably enjoy the book - it's dark and weird and strange and very much the inspiration for the darkness of this piece.
