Oh, I am SO glad this was here to sing me to my rest.

One oops (from proofing my own stuff all day):

Giles sort of knows, but Giles doesn't know, really, because he's assuming Spike and Ethan/Eyghon are precise equivalents, and they aren't, they can't be, because Xander and Giles are not equivalent, nor are the circumstances that threw Giles and Ethan together at all the same as those which broght Xander and Spike into close, long proximity. So apart from whatever qualities of mind and spirit separate Ethan and Spike (I'll leave that to beccaelizabeth and other experts) Giles is trying to draw conclusions from a bad analogy.

Buffy, the mightily self-absorbed and entirely clueless... maybe in canon death was a necesary maturing experience for her?
