Michael Nava has a great series of mystery novels featuring Henry Rios, a gay defense attorney. They're wonderful, and their politics are, in my opinion, much better than the right-leaning ickiness of many mysteries and thrillers.

I'd also recommend Reginald Hill's series of mysteries featuring Andy Dalziel and Peter Pascoe. The gay man is a secondary character, Sergeant Wield, but he's a consistent presence in the novels and a character of much coolassness. One of the best books in the long-running series is On Beulah Height. You can get what's going on even if you haven't read the earlier ones. (Although you will inevitably want to read all of them, because they're great.)

Josh Lanyon has a couple of books featuring an amateur detective who's gay; Fatal Shadows and A Dangerous Thing.

I don't know if it’s the author you're looking for, but try Alex Delaware books by, um, Jonathan Kellerman. The protagonists best friend is a gay man and a cop.

Oh, and there's no one gay in them, but if you haven't read any books with Repairman Jack in them, you're sure to like him. He has quite a sense of justice! Um, I don't know the author, I'll try to google for him though. Repairman Jack has his own web page, so the author is F. Paul Wilson. And the first book Jack is in is The Tomb, but the first one I read was the next one after that LEGACIES, which is pretty much a whole novel about him. And I was hooked.
