Nabbed from [livejournal.com profile] chocogood84.
Is this political? Yes. Sorry. But I feel it's damn important.
Here are the basics:
On January 20, Inauguration Day, people against bush and the War in Iraq are staging a massive boycott. "Not a Dime" consists of as many people as possible, for one day, spending NOT A DIME. Absolutely NO consumer spending that day.

Not One Damn Dime!

Particularly considering that the bloody Inauguration is going to cost something like 40 million dollars... Gah.

*kicks The Shrub*

Hope you can do this!

Thing all my friends adore most about the inauguration: it'll be a federal holiday (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A63896-2005Jan10.html) 'round these parts... NO TRAFFIC@#!$!@#! (Hm, bet we still get mail though.) I of course will be out of town and thus will not give a single doo-doo.

Well, I'm gonna try, but it'll be hard since I work in a mall. Yeah. *sigh*

And to add insult to injury, the city of DC is being asked to fork over a big chunk of its meager Homeland Security funding to help pay for it (including for things that aren't security related, like bleachers for people to watch the parade).

DC voted 9-1 for Kerry in the presidential election. And I have a feeling we're going to be made to pay (literally and metaphorically) for that for the next four years. No statehood for us anytime soon, and blessedly little chance of Congress giving us the financial support we need. Which, given how dependent we are on federal money for damn near everything, could really damage a city that's already got more than its share of poverty and crime.

Canadian here so can only follow along with great interest. And what an interesting idea. If it gets widely publicized and people really get behind it, that could be really dramatic. Skipping over to Michael Moore (and doesn't he clean up nicely) to see if he's got anything on his site about it.

Great initiative!
I won't follow it since I'm French and it wouldn't matter if I did, but I'll cheer you on with pom-poms!
Off to find poms-poms...

Hope you can do this!

Shouldn't be a problem. I heard an interview on NPR yesterday about the inauguration and the problem with space allocation along the route and some moron was complaining about a coalition of activists against Bush's second term as well as Code Pink and saying they were equivalent to "Saddam Hussein and the terrorists." I was gobsmacked that they simply aired this astounding statement with no questioning or qualification whatsoever.
