No, you're absolutely right, the two pieces have *totally* different feels. For one, Ellen *knows* the Winchesters - or as much as anyone can - so she sees exactly how they started, how they progressed, hot utterly fucked they are.
Efram, in the second one, saw only two desperate men who needed his medical training and expertise but has no knowledge of their background or anything.
So the second one *does* seem softer, yes. Plus, the boys are newly deprived of their father and wounded, tired, unhappy...so, yes.
I'm so pleased about your comments on the Sam'n'Dean 'ship! To me, it was utterly and totally *natural*. There is simply no one else they can trust - no one else who is allowed *in*. If not for each other...there would be nothing.
