Man, that plot line annoyed me when I was a teen reading crappy romance novels (and still does as an adult... also reading crappy romance novels... and big bang stories :D).
I am a big proponent of "a good author can make me believe anything," but it can be hard to root for a couple when I mainly want to roll my eyes at them. Very tough arc to do well, imho, as it's been done so badly, and most couples in this day and age have no reason to not talk to each other (unlike, say, a het regency period piece where an unmarried man and woman might never have a moment alone, and there weren't cell phones and such.)
