If I read any basic story line too often, it becomes boring, just like I get bored with some food because I eat it too often and then I don't want to touch it for months. But often the reason it becomes boring is because it is just the basic story line. If the characters don't feel real, if they don't got through the action because it is what they would do, true to themselves, then yes, it feels contrived and that is quickly boring. So no, practical people also exist in the world, so they should be able to exist in stories. Good luck.
