What if you wrote if from John's pov? You could still have that cool outside view of Sam and Dean--from someone who was, once upon a time, "normal".
I believe, that even after all that has happened, John would have the ability to take the outside view of his and sons' actions and choices. I don't know if he does it often, or at all, but he has the ability. He knows this isn't the only kind of life to be lead.
And what better time to reflect on all the craziness than as he lay dying? Or from beyond the grave, even? For destroying half of Kansas--and even though it's Kansas, not Chicago--that's still gotta be a hell of a lot of innocent deaths. He'd deserve to wind up one of the restless dead. Only I'd fear for the living who crossed his path.
