I think, if Angel hadn't been cancelled, the writers would have gotten their way and turned it into the Angel and Spike show. After all, the show was called Angel, and they needed Spike to make fun of Angel and point out when he was in the wrong, the way Cordelia used to do.
They didn't know when they brought Spike back as a ghost that they didn't have a season 6 to plan for.
I still don't know why so many fans fell for that Spike/Buffy mess. That's was the sickest pairing ever. They were totally wrong for each other. If they had let Spike become her battle partner, trusted advisor, best friend and foil, I would have stomached that, but the way they treated each other and the way she treated him...what the hell was romantic about it? It was disgusting.
Also, what you were before you were changed, as Darla claimed was true, then again, Spike didn't have much changing to do, so where was the redemption? He had nothing to fight to change. He was always good. Angel changed from being a worthless man, to an unbelievably evil vampire, to a vampire with a soul, but with nothing really holding him back from the feeding on the food except his will. Because if he got his original soul back, and maybe he didn't, he should have never given two shits about humanity. Even though he slipped a lot, he held on to his control and tried to follow a path of redemption. Also, he didn't find out about the Shanshu prophecy until end of season 1 or early season 2 on Angel.
Spike was always good, and there's nothing wrong with that. But Angel had much more to overcome then Spike did. I don't know if you've seen the episode yet, but Angel says some things about his father that make you realize that he was most likely abused by him, so maybe he had good reason to hate him and turn out to be a bad guy. But again, whoring around, carousing, and getting drunk a lot, unfortunately, is what a lot of guys do in their twenties, even today. I don't think that he was an evil murdering bastard before he got turned, just a careless, carefree, selfish asshole.
Oh well, we can argue all day.
I think Angelus was the type of vampire you were supposed to be, and Spike was some kind of strange aberration because Crazy Dru changed him. Who knows. When I say *supposed to be* vampires (on the show)according to canon, were evil and relished in hunting and killing/torturing human beings for fun and food.
And I never understood people who got pissed off at humans fighting back and trying to kill vampires, like it was some kind of prejudice against another species. Strange. Angelus and Spike, of course, followed their nature, and of course, humans followed their nature (the ones who knew) and fought for their lives.
On the other hand, just because we never saw it too much on the screen, doesn't mean that Spike wasn't an evil murderer when he was a vamp, he just may not have been as in to it as he pretended.
