No matter what the Joss/ME worshippers say, they were all about the plot device and not about character development or staying true to a character and his stupid story arcs.

Oh, and did you notice how sometimes Angel was dumb as dirt and then other times he was rather sophisticated and new more than everyone around him. In his moments of sophistication, Wesley and Fred only topped him when it came to science.
For example, someone would make a pop culture reference and Angel would stare at them dumbly, even though he'd *lived* for over 200 hundred years, and relatively speaking, (and this changed constantly from series to series and episode to episode) he wasn't living in alley and eating rats the whole time.
Other times he was hipper and more on top of things than everyone else.
