Thinking about the 't' and 's' confusion now, that might have something to do with the Ashkenazi Jews (of which I believe there are a fair amount in the U.S.), who tend to pronounce the at the end of a word with an 's' sound instead of a 't'--but that is phonetically incorrect. And since we are talking about "pure" Hebrew here, it should definitely be 't' instead of 's'.
