Oh, geez, wee!Wolfpack! I love John in this, because he's such a father--but yeah, the mean dog's dad. He's a man's man's man, him and his boys, not yet quite so feral and twisted that they can't respect a kid who stands up to them. And that Chris would stand up to him says a lot, too, because kids read that kind of stuff so well, especially from other kids. And Sammy, with a giggle for the dad that pats his cheek, and Dean, scary but excited about his gun, of course boys are going to bond.
I love, too, seeing the roots of the love that eventually winds up warped by their chase, twisting them too much together, so far they can't open up even this much for someone else. But it's there, and it's rooted in John brushing Sam's face and watching out for Dean. I almost prefer him to canon John, who disappears for a year with good reason perhaps, but still. Given what little I've heard about Origins, I could very much see John going this route.
